What is the difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica? +
Hydrophilic fumed silica has surface silanol groups (Si-OH) that make it water-wettable — ideal for aqueous systems and polar resins. Hydrophobic grades are surface-treated with HMDS, DDS, or PDMS to replace -OH with non-polar groups, enabling use in non-polar systems like silicone rubber and solvent-based coatings.
