Hydrophilic fumed silica has surface silanol groups (Si-OH) that make it water-wettable — ideal for aqueous systems and polar resins. Hydrophobic grades are surface-treated with HMDS, DDS, or PDMS to replace -OH with non-polar groups, enabling use in non-polar systems like silicone rubber and solvent-based coatings.

The series differ in pore volume and median particle size. GMATT 100 suits general-purpose wood coatings; GMATT 200 is optimised for water-based systems; GMATT 300 and 600 target UV-curable and high-transparency applications requiring extreme scratch resistance and zero haze.
